I can’t believe it’s already Thanksgiving, wasn’t it just Halloween?
During this week of Thankfulness I will be spending some much-needed down time with family and friends. And as a small business owner, I am also thankful for some things in business that educate and inspire me. Here are three things I’m thankful for this year.
A Book I Read – I recently read Jonah Berger’s Contagious: Why Things Catch On New York: Simon & Schuster (USA) 2013. This book gave me some great insight on why people share information. He outlined his findings using the acronym STEPPS.
- Social currency – We share things that make us look good
- Triggers – Top of mind tip of tongue
- Emotion – When we care we share
- Public – Built to show built to grow
- Practical value – News you can use
- Stories – Information travels under the guise of idle chatter
This is a great book if you are a business owner or marketing professional, I highly recommend it!
A Blog I Follow – Social Media Examiner – The social world is every changing and fast-moving. It’s virtually impossible for a business owner (or lone marketing professional!) to keep up. This site provides great insight on all of the major social media channels and offers tips on how you can optimize your performance. Check out these posts for what’s new on LinkedIn, how to get your pins noticed on Pinterest and ways to engage your fans on Facebook. This blog is a great resource for insights and ideas for your small business.
Business Leader – One of the most influential business leaders for me is Avinash Kaushik. If you read anything on Google analytics then you know who he is, if you don’t, please allow me to introduce him. Avinash is the author of two best-selling books, Web Analytics 2.0 and Web Analytics: An Hour a Day. He is also the Digital Marketing Evangelist for Google. You can find him posting on his blog, Occam’s Razor. The reason I find Avinash fascinating and interesting is his thorough understanding of analytics and how he explains its application to the average business owner (read me!). One of his most insightful post was “Six Visual Solutions to Complex Digital Marketing/Analytics Challenges.” His first point is about updating content on your website constantly vs. once a year launch, YES!!!! Read on for further enlightenment.
So there you have it, a brief list of some of the things I’m Thankful for in Business. I’d love to hear what you’re thankful for, please share below!
And have a Happy Thanksgiving!
